This year in the Frankfurt Book Fire the culture invited is the Catalan. For this reason Institut Ramon Llull of Catalonia gives subsidies for translation books in Catalan into German. During 2006 the Institut provides economic support for translate 82 books and 17 of these were in German.
In my opinion Institut Ramon Llull does a great contribution to the Catalan culture.
Nowadays the most important and the most talked topic about the Frankfurt Fair is if the Catalans writers who write in Spanish can go to this F.B.F. In general, people says this writers shouldn’t go there. I think the same, because this writers don’t write in Catalan.

Reading this article I learnt four words: strengthen, allocate, “draws closer” and grant.

NEW PUPILS FOR GIRONA SCHOOLS

(Catalonia Today)

Almost 1400 children have started classes in the province since September. It is due to the arrival of foreign families from Russia, Romania, Africa and Latin America.

These pupils are distributed amongst different schools around Girona.
One of the reasons why people go to school in Girona is because in Barcelona the houses are very expensive.

Saint Valentine’s day

Every February 14, in Britain and the United States, sweets, flowers and gifts are exchanged between lovers because is St. Valentine’s day. In Catalonia, for example, the lovers’ day is 23^rd of April, what is called Sant Jordi. This day roses and books are exchanged between couples.

About Valentine’s day we know this name comes from Valentine who was a roman man. One of the legends there are about this man explain Valentine was sentenced to death for committing a illegal action: he marriage young lovers. This action was unlawful because Emperor Claudius II said young single men made better soldiers.

In my opinion this is a nice legend but I don’t thing 14^th of February is nicer than another day. It’s true lovers exchange presents as a token of affection this day but from my point of view I think there are 365 days in a year and any of the other days are also days we can give a romantic present or tell to our lover: I love you.

Vocabulary I have learnt: Goat, spark and perform.

Hi Lourdes,

Firstly I will introduce me because I am a new student in this centre. My friends usually call me Eli but my real name is Elisabeth. I have come to Catalonia because I would like learn Catalan and I think this is the best way (I am here since July). Nowadays I live with my parents and my sister in a flat in Empuriabrava. There I have met some new friends and some of them are in my class. In Catalonia I feel comfortable and the people is very kind. Well, now you know about me: my name, my age, my family and some of my impressions about Catalonia.

I did first of “Batxillerat” in Madrid and my marks was well but I think I could get better marks. This year will be harder than last one and for this reason I will not go to any party, and in the students holidays I will be in my home all the time. Is an horror if I tell you my year in this way, no? jajaja… it’s only a joke!!

Firstly, all of this information, as you can check, is false. I live in Castelló d’Empúries and this year I will try be the best student of our centre :-D (I only say: “I will try”)

Well, I tell you my summer. I worked in a supermarket until 15 of August and the next day I went to Valencia with a friend. We were there three days and after we went to Madrid for four days. There we went to museums as for example “El museo del Prado”, “El museo de Reina Sofía”, and others, we went also to a tourist route in the centre and to the Warner Bros.

After that we returned to Castelló de la Plana and we spend there the rest of our holidays, until 2^nd of October. There we booked an apartment near the beach; it was very well. All the morning we get up early, eat a piece of fruit and went to the beach (without people) to play with a “Frisbee” along 30 minutes. After that we had a good breakfast. Another day we went to did hiking, we went to know the village, we went to the parties, we met a lot of people, etc.

I really like spend some of my holidays in Madrid in Valencia and in Castelló de la Plana with my friend.

And what about you?

Well, this course has begun and I wish you luck for it.

Good project and a good "English year"

First of all I thought this new project wouldn’t be a good experience, but now I am very happy I have done it. The most important about the project has been talking in English among ourselves and doing oral presentations. Although you have to study what you have to explain, it is also a way of learning English.

And in this course, when I thought we wouldn’t learn anything, I have learnt a lot.

Now I am more confident about myself speaking and writing English.

But, teachers!!!! I think in this project there has been something missing: A TRIP (TO LONDON)! Don’t you think so?

I hope next year we can go to a country where we have to communicate with people in English.

Good project and a good “English year”!
